Atul Bhate
Vehicle Line Director (Utility Vehicles)

A good part of one's productive phase of life is spent working.  I believe that the environment influences your personality as you grow in life and it is important that you choose an environment and an organization which helps you explore yourself and scale new heights. Most importantly one must continue to be a good human being. In many ways, that's what the Tata Group stands for.

I joined Tata Motors in 1992 as a young Graduate Engineer Trainee and it was a conscious choice for me over some renowned names in petrochemicals and software companies offering twice the salary as what the then TELCO was offering. The choice was actually simple. The Tata name evokes a sense of trust, honesty, progressive well-being, harmonious co-existence, sense of pride - qualities of being human and they immediately reverberate with you as human beings. The second reason of course was my passion for automobiles.
It has been a pleasurable experience so far and I believe nothing is enjoyable without challenges and pushing oneself to keep expanding one's limits. Tata Motors allowed me to prosper from being a passionate young engineer to a Vehicle Line Director today. Tata Motors provides utmost freedom to excel in every sphere of business processes. In this journey I became a part of some really exciting projects which effectively became milestones in the evolution of the company. To name a few - India's first indigenously developed car - Indica , the JLR acquisition which included discussing and negotiating contractual agreements with Ford in areas of Product Development and Sourcing, Due Diligence of MDI Air Engine Development, setting up of New Product Development Process in Tata Motors, Strategy Development for the business, ensuring Operational Excellence through various tools and techniques, creating the Powertrain Product Plan for PVBU business and leading the development of the next generation g-asoline engine which is highly critical to the PVBU business.

When I talk about freedom at Tata Motors I would also like to share how it encouraged me to accomplish my desire of continuous learning. I pursued International Business course with IIFT Delhi, Japanese language course with Pune University, and Materials and Financial Management course with Pune University. The best part was the Company-sponsored Management Executive Programme with IIM (Ahmedabad), after being selected through the ‘Fast Track Scheme’ in Tata Motors, which is again a unique career acceleration opportunity for bright young individuals.
The Company has tie-ups with Confederation of Indian Industries and US Embassy, which sponsored me for a Global Executive Leadership Programme with the Tepper Business School in Pennsylvania. It was also a privilege to have Mr. Harish Bhat (the now CEO for Tata Global Beverages) to come and acknowledge the work done during the Indica development and publish the same with my short interview in his Book "Tata Log".

I could go on and on with many such profound experiences with the company but I would leave you with two things I sincerely believe in - be passionate about whatever you do and choose an environment that helps you develop not only financially but also as a human being set on the path of self-discovery.

In the end, it does not matter how fast you run, or how hard you run, but HOW LONG YOU RUN!!
